Archaeology Notes

HY42SW 20.05 41792 21515 and c. 4178 2152

The concrete base for a building is situated in the angle of the track to Queenamuckle and the Gorseness Road.

The building is noted as the 'work shop' on the layout plan of the battery (PRO WO 192/267, map no.7). A structure annotated 'tank' on the current OS 1:2500 scale digital map would appear to have been built on the same site.

A possible pillbox situated immediately to the NW of the concrete hut base, has been identified from RAF vertical air photographs (LEU/UK 2, 7061-7062, 16 April 1948). No evidence for this was found at the junction of the track to Queenamuckle farmsteading on the date of visit, the road junction having been altered since 1948.
