Archaeology Notes

HY41SE 52.03 HY 46816 14482 and 46625 14534

Only one searchlight platform survives of a battery of two, about 100m W of the three gun-emplacements (HY41SE 52.01). Constructed of shuttered concrete, flat roofed with the platform facing NW.

The second platform which lay about 90m to the SE (HY 46816 14482), is visible on RAF vertical air photographs (LEU/UK 2 , 7099-7101, flown 16 April 1948) and on the current OS digital 1:2500 scale maps. An examination was made of the coast at this point during the visit in 1999 and all that could be seen was an area of disturbed ground and a section of collapsed cliff.

The searchlight emplacements are shown on an annoted plan of the battery (PRO WO 192/110 and WO 192/115) as numbers 3 and 4.
