Archaeology Notes

HY41SE 52.01 46742 14507, 46731 14528 and 46702 14524

Three square-shaped brick and shuttered concrete gun-emplacements (HY41SE 52.01) are situated about 25m inland of the exterme tip of Car Ness. The structures measure about 10m square and with the open side to the sea. All the emplacements are in use as animal shelters and the open sides have been closed off with wooden shuttering. None of the emplacements were entered on the date of visit.

In 1940, the emplacements mounted 6-inch Mk VII guns on Naval mountings (PRO WO 199/2627; WO 192/110; WO 192/115).

Immediately to the rear are the rectangular roofed crew shelters and 6-inch shell magazines.

The gun-emplacements are visible on RAF vertcial air photographs (LEU/UK 2, 7099-7101, 16 April 1948) along with the magazines and crew shelters. It is not known when the guns were removed for scrap.

Visited by RCAHMS (DE), August 1999
