NO02SE 4 c. 09 24.

On the south-west side of what is now called the Brown Tod, happened on the 23rd August, 1582, The Raid of Ruthven, which was a skirmish betwixt the Earle of Merr, and William Stewart, brother to the Earl of Arran, when the latter was defeated and taken prisoner in his attempt to rescue King James VI from the Protestant Hands in Ruthven Castle.
