OS 6"map, (1970)

On Sunday 1st September 1644, the Marrquis of Montrose, leading a Royalist force of 2,700 men, encountered a Convenanter army of 7,000 infantry with 700 cavalry and 9 cannon under Lord Elcho, drawn up at Tippermuir (Tibbermore). The Covenanters were soon over-run, and estimates of the casualties varied between several hundred and two thousand.
