Standing Building Recording (4 October 2023)

NO 14953 44831 Alder Archaeology were asked to produce a level 1 historic building record of Kinloch Parish Church in advance of planning approval being sought to convert the building to residential use.

The church is a harled rubble built structure with modern interlocking concrete tiled pitched and gabled roof. It was constructed in 1793-4 and has not been significantly altered with the exception of East and West harled brick porches with hipped slate roofs, and a stone and brick bellcote with pyramidal cap. The structure is abutted by a modern timber, rubble and corrugated iron lean-to which is ruinous, and a crenelated rubble wall surrounding a two level kirkyard to the South and East. Inside the building, is a timber gallery spanning the North, East and West sides and a timber dais and octagonal pulpit on the South wall. Timber pews with occasional pew gates are provided on both levels. Although altered and repaired, the timber furnishings and windows appear to date from the original construction. The church is in poor condition, having last been used for worship in 1971. It remains largely watertight, but water ingress in the SW corner and crumbling plaster were noted throughout.
