Archaeology Notes

ND35SE 103.20 c. 3661 5142

A small square pillbox has been identified from WW II RAF vertical air photographs (NLA 57, 5075-5076, flown 21 February 1943), which shows the structure lying immediately to the E of a track that now forms Girnigoe Street.

The pillbox is visible within a circular barbed-wire enclosure, which itself is set within the outer perimeter fence of the airfield. Also noted from the photographs are two lines of zig-zag trenches radiating from the pillbox . (Information from Defence of Britain Project form, Mr A Gutteridge).

The pillbox was demolished when Girnigoe Street was constructed in the postwar period.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), November 2004.

Note (6 May 2022)

An extensive series of trenches can be seen on the RAF vertical air photograph M/038/NLA/057 5076A (flown 21 February 1943) around the southern boundary of the Second World War airfield and on either side of the pillbox.

The area has been redeveloped and no trenches are thought to survive.

Information from the Pillbox Study Group to HES 6 May 2022
