Archaeological Evaluation (23 September 2013 - 10 October 2014)

AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Springfield Properties PLC to undertake an archaeological evaluation on a large scale mixed use development on land at Bertha Park, Perth, Perth and Kinross. The development encompasses a large area of some 315 ha of which 165 ha was deemed at potential risk of disturbance from the proposed development. This report details the evaluation results from both the 2013 works and the following 2014 works which covers all 22 fields identified in the Written Scheme of Investigation (Dunbar 2013).

In total a little over a 10% evaluation of the available fields was conducted totaling some 159,280 m2 opened in 958 evaluation trenches. The evaluation revealed several clusters of features, which were almost entirely prehistoric where dateable artefacts were recovered. Alongside this were several unstratified topsoil finds of worked lithics and even a fragment of polished stone axe which again demonstrate the existence of a clear prehistoric presence across the site. It should be noted that whilst archaeology was uncovered from across the evaluated area it appears to be directly related to the topography of the site with the archaeology predominantly located on the higher, free draining sands and gravels. Whilst there was a clear presence of prehistoric activity on site there were some fields with no archaeology noted.

A suitable programme of mitigation will be required to be formalised with PKHT to deal with the zones of archaeology whilst the lower lying areas are deemed to require no further works.

Excavation (26 October 2016 - 8 December 2016)

NO 08000 27000 (centred on) An excavation was undertaken, 26 October – 8 December 2016, in advance of a proposed residential development. The work targeted eleven areas of known archaeological remains, which had been identified during evaluation work in 2013 and 2014. In total seven of the areas were found to contain further substantial archaeological remains. These features, which were recorded, provided a range of evidence for prehistoric and post medieval settlement and included three post-built roundhouses, a rectangular post-built structure and several linear ditches of post medieval date. Artefactual evidence included undecorated ceramic material, and coarse and chipped stone.

The distribution of the archaeological evidence appeared to be directly related to the topography of the site, with the archaeology predominantly located on the higher, S-facing, free draining sands and gravels.
