This lighthouse is situated on the headland of Rubha Reidh, from which it guards both the E side of the North Minch and the approach to Loch Ewe, the entrance to which is at NG 82 92. Although road-served and on the mainland, it was classified as a 'relieving station'. The associated shore station was in rented premises at Dingwall.
It was constructed in 1912 by D A Stevenson, an earlier (1853) proposal for a light in this area not having been implemented, and was apparently provided with a telephone from the outset. It was converted to a major automatic light in 1976, and at least part of the premises are now in use as residential accommodation.
Keepers from this lighthouse were instrumental in the rescue of survivors from the (1944) wreck of the William H Welch (NG79SW 8001 and NG79SE 8001).
