Archaeology Notes

NO89SW 97 8348 9390

For Brucewells steading (NO 8380 9349), see NO89SW 96.

(Name cited as Brucewell, and location as NO 8348 9390). The remains of a corn-drying kiln were uncovered by Mr S Bruce in investigating the reason for a field being called Kiln Field. It was discovered set into a moderate SW-facing slope at an altitude of 200m OD.

The bowl of the kiln measures about 2.3m in diameter at the surface and up to 1.8m in depth; two lintel-stones remain in place across the flue. Part of a jug strap handle was found in the fill; this is attributed to the 17th century if not earlier.

To the NW of the kiln, there are the fottings of a small building, which is bisected by a field wall.

Information from Mr S Bruce (Stonehaven), per Aberdeenshire Archaeological Service.

NMRS, MS/2063.

The location of this kiln may suggest an association with the former farmstead (NO89SW 56) at NO 8347 9372.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 8 October 2004.
