A small military camp has been identified from RAF vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK160, 4012-4013, flown 21 August 1946) at the NE end of Finart Bay.
Visible on the air photographs are three distinct groups of huts, a pier and a concrete bridge (NS 18795 88418) across the Glen Finart Burn. Visible on the air phtographs is one group of eight huts with five Nissen huts nearer the shoreline. Immediately to the SW are a further six larger huts and nearer the bridge, twelve more of varying sizes.
Apart from one possibly two huts from the latter group, an area now set aside as a car park now occupies the site of the camp.
Information from RCAHMS (DE), October 2004
The camp was part of the Special Operations training centres created during 1942 following the failed Dieppe raid. The training concentrated particularly on landing beach communication and organisation. Training in landing craft techniques particularly disembarkation and re-embarkation, beach obstacles. The Headquarters of HMS Armadillo, Royal Navy Commando training base was at Glenfinart House (NS18NE 12).
