Archaeology Notes

ND34SE 8016 unlocated

NLO: Wick [name: ND 361 508].

See also ND36SE 8022.

Possibly beyond Scottish waters.

Wick, 8th Dec., two ships' nameboards have been picked up in this vicinity, one at Keiss, marked "SMARAGD", the other at Irisgoe, marked "FLORIDA". The letters on both boards are in gilt on a black ground.

Source: Shipping Intelligence, LL, No. 19,543, London, Tuesday December 12 [1876].

NMRS, MS/829/70 (no. 4484).

(No classification or cargo specified: date cited as December 1876). Florida (possible name): nameboard washed ashore at Ires Geo, Wick. Name of vessel assumed [to have] foundered.

(Location cited as N58 23.50 W3 3.00).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are arbitrary, being derived from the reported location of the disovery of wreckage. The vessel presumably foundered out at sea, possibly beyond Scottish waters.

The location of Irisgoe or Ires Geo cannot be established from the available map evidence, and the date cited is presumably that of the reported discovery of wreckage.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 5 October 2004.
