Archaeology Notes

NLO: Inverness [name: NH 665 455]

Beauly Firth [name centred NH 59 47].

WAVERLEY (s), of Leith, Leith to Inverness, stranded, 15th Aug., in Inverness firth.

Source: Abstract of Board of Trade Casualty Returns, Shipping Intelligence, LL, No. 19,449, London, Thursday August 24 1876.

NMRS, MS/829/70 (no. 4418).

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Inverness Firth is not noted as such on the 1996 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map; the name may apply to Beauly Firth.

The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), possibly suggesting that she was successfully refloated.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 4 October 2004.
