N60 20.7 W1 1.4

NLO: Symbister [name: HU 539 626]

Whalsay [name centred HU 56 63].

Formerly entered as HU56SE 8009 (unlocated).

The WALTON of Leith, from Archangel, is wrecked on the Island of Whalsay. Crew saved, and part of the cargo expected to be saved.

Source: The Marine List, LL, No. 5237, London, Friday December 12 1817.

NMRS, MS/829/70 (no. 5939).

(Name cited as Watson, or possibly Walton, and classified as brig: no cargo specified but date of loss cited as 23 November 1817). This vessel stranded at Bay of Symbister, Whalsey. Capt. Lister. Registration: Leith.

(Location of loss cited as N60 20.67 W1 1.5).

I G Whittaker 1998.

Bay of Symbister is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map but the name probably applies to the prominent bay (containing the harbour) around which the village of Symbister is disposed.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 1 September 2004.
