Archaeology Notes

NN95SW 11 9108 5435.

(Area: NN 912 544) A cup marked stone known as "Clach na Buidseach" (Witchcraft Stone) is built into a stone wall on Tullypowrie farm, nearly 300 yards from the steading. It is also said (Dixon 1925) to be 300 yards W of the ruined church on the W side of Tullypowrie Burn (See NN95SW 15). The stone was removed some time ago, revealing 2 cups on the side hidden by the wall in addition to the 4 cups on the front face. The stone has since been restored to its original position.

J H Dixon 1922; J H Dixon 1925.

This stone, as described and illustrated, now stands at NN 9108 5435 on a pedestal of random stone. A rectangular hollow to take a small plaque has been cut into it, although the plaque has gone. It is still locally known as 'Clach na Buidseach'. The hollows are not true cup marks, but their purpose is obscure. It is not a pivot stone.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (S F S) 25 February 1975.
