Early Medieval Carved Stones Project

Logierait 2, Perthshire, Pictish cross-slab

Measurements: H 1.68m, W 0.52m, D 0.14m

Stone type:

Place of discovery: NN 967 520

Present location: within Logierait church.

Evidence for discovery: found lying in the churchyard at Logierait in 1986.

Present condition: extremely worn on both broad faces and possibly deliberately defaced.

Description

Both broad faces of this slab bear traces of both incised and false relief carving. On face A is a quadrilobate cross outlined by roll moulding and with large circular armpits closed with arcs. It bears traces of interlace infilling. There is a large S-dragon on either side of the upper arm, facing one another with a large disc between their open jaws. The disc sinks slightly into the top of the upper arm of the cross. Narrow panels of interlace flank the shaft of the cross.

On face C there are two large Pictish symbols above two horsemen and a hound, and a large incised frame at the base, now empty. The double disc symbol has a rudimentary Z-rod, and beneath it is a serpent and Z-rod. Little detail survives of the two horsemen.

Date: ninth century.

Archaeology Notes

NN95SE 33 967 520.

On the S side of the mort safe enclosure in Logierait Churchyard is a rectangular slab-stone five feet in length bearing faint traces of design in relief on both sides. This includes a Celtic Cross on one side and borders of probably interlace design.

A G Reid 1986

This sculptured stone was closely examined in 1988. It was found to be a Class II Pictish cross-slab, probably of 9th century date. On the front is a quadrilobate Celtic cross; the shaft of the cross is flanked by interlace, while on either side of the upper arm are two confronting "S-dragons", their gaping jaws forming a plain, roughly circular boss above.

The back is more badly weathered than the front. At the top are two Pictish symbols, a double disc and a serpent and Z-rod. Below these damaged figures is a plain area, enclosed in an incised margin, which is connected to one running round the edge of the whole stone. At the very bottom of this side is a narrow raised area. The carving on both sides is in relief. The exact dimensions of this stone are 165cm by 52cm.

The cross-slab has been moved into the parish church to prevent further weathering.

Class II cross-slab.

Logierait 2: On the cross face are fish monsters in the upper quadrants of the cross. On the reverse are carved a double-disc over a serpent and Z-rod which are above animals and two mounted figures.

A Mack 1997.
