(NN 9782 4021) Trochrie Castle (NR) (Ruins)

OS 6" map (1901)

The remains of a circular tower c. 18' high, apparently part of a Z-plan castle of the Gowrie family, which was burned in 1545.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845 (R Allen); D Campbell 1888; SDD List 1963

Only the E half of the tower remains, the walls of which reach a maximum height of 5.0m. Elsewhere, the ground plan is obscured by packed rubble to a height of about 1.0m. Several portions of a spiral stairway show through the interior debris, and there is a gun loop in the S wall. The tower would have measured 2.8m in diameter within a wall 1.0m thick; there are now no identifiable signs of a Z-plan castle. About 3.0m to the SE of the tower is an old footing (3.5m x 3.5m) of uncertain purpose but most probably post-dating the castle.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.
