Archaeology Notes

NN94NE 1.01 99111 47765.

(Area: NN 991 478) A cross surmounted by a unicorn stands in the centre of the lawn outside Dalguise House. Nothing is known regarding its history, but from its form and design it may be inferred that it was originally intended as a village cross.

T Hunter 1883

NN 9911 4776. The alleged cross is a spiral-fluted column some 2.0m high, mounted on a stone plinth. The unicorn terminal (a common adornment of Scottish crosses) is now missing. The origin of this column is not certain but it is believed by Mr M Edwards (Dalguise Field Centre) to have been brought here from France by the Stewarts of Dalguise.

Visited by OS (JP) 27 February 1975.
