Archaeology Notes

NT18NW 88 1118 8923

A large number of Nissen and wooden huts have been identified from postwar RAF vertical air photographs (58(A)386, Pt.1, 5335-5337, flown 21 May 1948) in an area on the S-facing slopes of Townhill. All the huts have been built within an area of mixed woods.

It is not known whether this camp housed military personnel or 'Bevan boy' recruits for mine work.

The area is still depicted as wooded with at least three of the huts from the camp, on the current OS 1:10000 scale map (1990)

Information from RCAHMS (DE), July 2004
