(NN 9336 2834) St Methven's Chapel (NR) (Site of)

OS 25" map (1901)

Chapel (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1958)

A chapel dedicated to St Methven (or St McBean (OSA 1795)) now demolished, stood on the banks of the Almond, at the Bridge of Buchanty.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1845

Although no trace of the chapel now remains, part of the S and W sides of an old wall which probably enclosed the site is still evident. The dedication could not be confirmed.

The published site of the chapel lies two-thirds of the way down the steep westerly scarp (2.7m high) of a level platform. The most likely sites for the building are either on top of the platform or in the enclosed area to the W of the base of it.

Visited by OS (RD) 11 January 1968

The dedication is to Beoan (Mo-Bheathan), a saint of British origin in the church of Tamlachta Menann in Ulster before 800 AD.

W J Watson 1926
