(NN 9482 1407) St. Mackessog's Church (NR)

OS 6" map, (1959)

The ruined church to the north of Auchterarder was dedicated to St. Mechessock (MacGibbon and Ross 1896-7), Kessoc, Mokessog (Scott 1918) or Munge (OSA 1782). It is concealed by vegetation and almost no architectural features are visible except a piscina. Both of the side walls are considerably ruined. In 1198 the church of Auchterarder was given to the Abbey of Inchaffray, but the existing ruins are much later (included with other 15th/16th century examples (MacGibbon and Ross 1896-7).

OSA 1792; D MacGibbon and T Ross 1896-7; A B Scott 1918.

Little of interest remains in this late medieval church. The eastern part was built up in 1832 when it was converted into a burial place.

I G Lindsay 1950

Generally as described above. The OS spelling of St. Mackessog's is accepted locally.

Visited by OS (R D) 28 July 1967.
