Archaeology Notes

NN91NW 19 931 163.

NN 931 163. Two ring ditches and a scatter of shallow pits, situated 250m E of the henge described on NN91NW 18 and first noticed on RCAHMS air photographs (PT 5468; PT 5604) were excavated by G Barclay in 1979 in advance of development.

The large ring-ditch was about 4.5m in diameter internally. A shallow pit containing burnt stones was found in the E half of the enclosed area.

The second ring-ditch, 2.5m in diameter, lay 14m S of the former; a shallow pit containing a small quantity of cremated bone was found in the SW part of the enclosure. Any trace of barrows which might have been dug from the shallow ring ditches had been destroyed by ploughing.

G Barclay 1979; G Barclay 1980.
