Archaeology Notes

NN85SW 2 833 508.

(NN 8324 5020) At Shenavail farmhouse is a stone, cup marked on one side, with a cross on the other. It was found locally.

Information from M E C Stewart, 14 December 1964; M E C Stewart 1968; J G Dunbar 1958

The stone is now in the possession of Miss E I Clark (Fasgadh, Weem) who obtained it from Mrs MacKenzie of Shenavail, wife of the finder who is now deceased. It was found many years ago on Meall Rawer (NN 833 508) above Shenavail. There are 13 cups marks, one ringed, and the cross is a latin cross. One edge is broken and it is possible that formerly there were more cup marks. The position of the cross suggests that it was carved after the stone was broken.

Visited by OS (AA) 5 March 1975

This stone has now been removed to Perth Museum (Accession no: 1985.105).

Information from Mrs S Yellowlees, Aberfeldy, Perth, 24 July 1985.
