NLO: Knock Bay [name centred NW 977 576]

Portpatrick [name: NW 998 540].

Possibly on map sheet NX96SE.

Possibly lost in Irish or English waters.

Stranraer, 19th Mar., a lifebuoy, marked 'HAIDEL, of Leith', in black letters on a white ground, has been picked up on the beach in Knock bay, two miles north of Portpatrick.

Source: Shipping Intelligence, LL, No. 18,072, London, Thursday March 21 [1872].

NMRS, MS/829/69 (no. 3776).

(Classified as iron barque, with cargo of (possibly) timber: date cited of loss as 19 March 1872). Haidee: a lifebuoy, timber and wreckage from this vessel were found at Knock Bay, 2 miles N of Portpatrick.

Registration: leith. Built 1869. Length: 57m. Beam: 9m.

(Location of loss cited as N54 52.0 W5 12.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being that of the reported discovery of wreckage. The loss of this vessel may have occurred in Irish or English waters.

The circumstances of this loss of the loss of this vessel remain unclear. The vessel may have foundered out in the North Channel, and debris washed ashore in the area stipulated.

The form of the name of the vessel that is cited in the primary account is preferred over that cited by Whittaker.

The date cited by Whittaker is evidently that of the reported discovery of wreckage, rather than of the loss of the vessel.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 22 April 2004.
