Activities

Field Visit (2010)

Oude dam is the lower of two dams which supply Kilmelford power station (see separate item). Oude receives water from Tralaig (see separate item) via the natural stream bed. Oude dam provides storage capacity and regulates the flow of water into the power station. The dam is of mass gravity type and is situated in a narrow gorge. It has a fixed spillway with the pedestrian walkway oversailing. A tunnel intake gatehouse is located immediately upstream of the dam containing the gates to control the flow of water into the tunnel through to the power station. This is a relatively small dam with a limited landscape contribution. Some additional interest is gained from the tight setting within a steep gorge.
