(NN 8739 5045) Carn Tulach (NR)

Human Remains found (NAT)

OS 6" map (1902)

Carntulach, a large and more or less natural mound of sand and gravel. At the western extremity, which was higher, there stood a circle of stones of which only one now remains, 3'7" high and just over 3' in girth. It is said that when the mound was excavated for gravel, "many cists were discovered", but no record of the details appears to have been kept (F R Coles 1910). A stone hammer, however, found in a cist at Carntullich, is in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS), (Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1893).

According to information from Mrs M E C Stewart (15 December 1964) at least one cist burial was exposed many years ago, but the cover stone was replaced to prevent further disturbance. She also mentions that a second cist is also said to have been found here.

M E C Stewart 1967

Carn Tulach is a high point on the glacial ridge called Tulach Cultullich. It has been separated from the body of the ridge to the W by quarrying and ploughing which presumably disclosed the cists. The slim upright stone (measuring 1.2m high x 0.3m x 0.2m) surmounting the summit, does not have the appearance of a stone from a stone circle and it is doubtful if it is of ancient origin.

Carn Tulach has been recently quarried on the E to within 2.0m of the stone, showing its natural content of sand and a little gravel.
