Archaeology Notes

(Area NN 857 427) Cairn near Loch Hoil standing at the summit of a high pass.

(Plotted approximately from small scale distribution map).

M E C Stewart 1961.

NN 8607 4236 At the south end of a hill-pass leading to Loch Hoil and on the west side of the old track is a 'pear shaped' cairn of rather small stones. It is oriented N-S with its apex uphill to the north and measures 11.0m long by 8.0m maximum width. The cairn rises to a point 1.1m high, 3.0m from its apex and is hidden from anyone approaching from the north. It is known locally as the 'Witches Cairn' and is said to have been built by burial parties travelling from Glen Quaich to Aberfeldy (information from Gamekeepers at Gatehouse and at Lochans).

Visited by OS (W D J), 4 November 1970.
