In 1857, Alexander MacGregor was appointed to design the exterior of Rosebank Cottages. The scheme was developed from Edinburgh's first colony scheme, at Shaw's Place in Pilrig. The aim was to provide: ‘flatted cottages for the better class of mechanics’. Each flat comprised a living room, two bedrooms, a scullery and a water-closet.
The Pilrig and Rosebank schemes were influential in the other colonies schemes across Edinburgh, built by the Edinburgh Cooperative Building Company. The first of these was the Stockbridge Colonies in 1861.
