26th April 1859, THORNLEY, of Sunderland, 233 tons, Official Number 2812, Master Thomas Manson, abandoned in the Frith (sic) of Forth. Departed Sunderland for Hamburg, carrying coal. Abandoned opposite Elie Point in increasing winds. Crew picked up by PHANTASIE and landed at Leith. THORNLEY drifted on to Leven Sands. Following day fishermen boarded the vessel and found signs that the bow port had been deliberately opened. Inquiry found that the THORNLEY was most unwarrantably abandoned.

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Leven Sands are not noted as such on the 1996 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name probably applies to the extensive sands between Leven and Lundin Links, on the NW side of Largo Bay.
