Watching Brief (May 2010)
NT 173 702 A watching brief was carried out in May 2010 during ground-breaking works associated with the construction of a conservatory on the site of a former conservatory and orangery in the grounds of Hermiston House, a 17th-century Category B listed building. The house was largely rebuilt in the mid-19th century by William Burn and further restoration and modernisation was carried out by Esme Gordon in 1955.
Foundation trenches were excavated to a depth of 0.5m and were found to contain disturbed garden soil. The removal of the soil to a level c0.3m below the current ground surface revealed the SE-facing elevation of the existing garden wall. The foundation footing of the former glasshouse partition was also seen in plan. The masonry remains comprised two courses of brickwork embedded in a 0.75m wide concrete pour. These remains correlated with a visible scar on the SE elevation of the garden wall.
