Islay, Jan. 9, 6.25 p.m., the schooner WITTOW, of Stralsund, Bohlmann master, from Larne from (? for) Liverpool, in ballast, left 5th, and was wrecked on Stremnist [Stremnish], near Mull of Oa, Islay, at about 10 p.m., of the 7th. Master, wife and cook, Fritz Garbasch, drowned: remaining four saved. Strong gale and snow from E. Vessel strewn on the shore.

Bowmore, Jan. 8, it is reported that a three-masted schooner, in ballast, name unknown, is a total wreck close to the Mull of Oa here: captain, wife and cook drowned. [Record received incomplete].

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Stremnish is not noted as such on the current edition of the OS (GIS) MasterMap, but Stremnishmore steading (NR34SW 68) is at NR 31084 40846.
The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998).
