Field Visit (3 November 1999)

NT70NE 36 75668 07695

The footings of four subrectangular buildings are situated on a W-facing terrace overlooking Hawkwillow Burn near the foot of the NW flank of Grindstone Law. The largest of the buildings (Kale99 66) measures 11m from N to S by 6.2m transversely within a stony bank about 2m in thickness and up to 1m in height. Immediately to the E lie two further buildings; the first (Kale99 65) measures 9.5m from E to W by 6.3m transversely within a stony bank about 1.5m in thickness and up to 0.6m in height, the second (Kale99 64) 9.5m from N to S by 6m transversely within a stony bank about 1.5m in thickness and up to 0.5m in height. The fourth building lies downslope to the WNW (Kale99 67) and measures 7m from E to W by 4m transversely within a stony bank about 1.5m in thickness and up to 0.4m in height. Any further details were obscured by the thick bracken that clothed the buildings on the date of visit.
