Loinn Mhor (in ruins) (NAT)

OS 6" map (1867)

(Area: NN 706 614) Large inhabited area with numerous foundation courses. Surrounded by ruinous stone wall.

'A' = (NN 7079 6141) Horse-shoe shaped pit: built up edges: open to the south.

'B' = (NN 7077 6138) Stone-lined pit 3'-4' deep, and 14ft across.

'D' = (NN 7036 6131) Curious depression in gravel mound, approximately 20ft across by 4' 6" deep.

Information from M E C Stewart, 2 February 1956.

An area of depopulation, centred on NN 7077 6149, enclosed by a ruinous stone wall, and comprising the footings of seven rectangular buildings, two enclosures and a small ? storage pit. The buildings vary in size from 22.0m x 6.0m to 6.0m x 4.0m.

Site 'D' described by Stewart is at NN 7039 6129; its purpose could not be ascertained. Site 'C' was not located on a boulder strewn slope. This area is due to be quarried for mica and a rescue dig was directed by

Mrs M E C Stewart in June, 1969. Finds include a spinde whorl, part of a shale bangle, illegible coin and quantity of 18/19th century pottery. It is suggested that the site be further excavated in the hope of finding evidence of IA occupation. No further details are available at present (M Stewart, "Tempar", Perth).

A cairn (NN76SW 5) lies within the enclosing wall.

Surveyed at 1/2500 scale.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 19 June 1969

Seven unroofed buildings, one of which is L-shaped, and a head-dyke are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1867, sheet xxviii), but they are not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1988).

Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 2 October 1997
