Archaeology Notes

NR91NE 8002 unlocated

NLO: Bennan Head [name: NR 991 201].

Possibly on map sheet NS01NW.

29 December 1893, LOCH SLOY, 23 years, of Glasgow. Wood smack. 29 ton. 2 men. Master D.K. Wakefield. Owner D. Stalker, Ardentinny, Argyllshire. Troon to Campbeltown. Coal. Wind WSW1. About 1 mile SW of Benan [Bennan] Head, Arran.

Source: PP Abstracts of Shipping Casualties on Coasts, or in Rivers and Harbours of the UK July 1893-94 (1895 [C.7858] LXXXVII.327).

NMRS, MS/829/68 (no. 1203).

(Classified as wooden smack, with cargo of coal: date of loss cited as 29 December 1893). Loch Sloy: this vessel stranded approximately 1 mile SW of Bennan Head. Capt. Wakefield.

Registration: Glasgow. Built 1870. 37grt. Length: 19m. Beam: 5m.

(Location of loss cited as N55 7.0 W5 0.0).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Bennan Head is the southernmost point of Arran, so the cited location suggests that the vessel foundered rather than stranded, as is suggested by Whittaker. The available ewvidence does not contradict this view.

A location of loss off Arran is preferred over one off South Ayrshire, as is suggested by Whittaker.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 29 October 2003.
