Archaeology Notes

NX94NW 8013 c. 93 48

N54 49 W3 39

Possibly in English waters.

Formerly entered as NX85SE 8008 (unlocated).

[1820] sloop JOAN (Ewart. Master) from Whitehaven to Dumfries, with a general cargo, was wrecked about 13 miles east of the mouth of the River Dee and totally lost, almost the whole of the cargo was also lost.

Source: PP Return of Shipwrecks on the Coast of Scotland (1836 (232) [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/67 (no. 621).

(No classification specified: cargo cited as coal and date of loss as 24 August 1820). Joan: this vessel was wrecked on Drumroof Sands [Dumroof Bank]. Capt. Ewart.

Registration: Dumfries.

(Location of loss cited as N54 40.00 W3 50.00).

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Drumroof Sands are not noted as such on the 2000 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name probably applies to a portion of the extensive sands around the the Urr estuary [Urr Waterfoot: NX 855 518].

The date of loss cited by Whittaker remains unverified, but is accepted.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 4 September 2003.

The location assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. Per contra the above, UKHO chart no. 1346 (1976, amended 1989) notes Dumroof Bank around N54 49 W3 39, about 6nm ESE of Balcary Point [name: NX 829 493], to the N of Middle Channel, and apparently extending into English waters.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 21 October 2009.
