Archaeology Notes

NN74NW 7 7308 4644.

(NN 7301 4648) "A large circular hut foundation with a very low earth bank."

Informatin from M E C Stewart, 2 February 1956.

This denuded alleged hut circle at NN 7308 4644, lies on the edge of a river terrace. It is oval, measuring 17.0m E-W by 15.0m between the centres of a turf bank.

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Visited by OS (NKB) 2 October 1975

A ploughed-down enclosure situated on low-lying intensively cultivated land, and at some time utilised as a golf course. The turf bank which is up to 0.4m high encloses a depressed centre; there is no evidence of an entrance nor trace of stone in the bank. It is almost certainly not a hut circle, and although its origin is not clear, its position and close proximity to the ditched bowl barrow (NN74NW 8) suggests that it may be the remains of a funerary monument.

Surveyed at 1:2500

Visited by OS (MJF) 1 December 1978
