Archaeology Notes

NX54NE 8013 unlocated

1797 the ship ADVENTURE, of New York (Zachariah Swaine, master) laden with flax-seed, fruit etc., was wrecked about 5 miles west of the mouth of the River Dee and the cargo destroyed.

Source: PP Return of Shipwrecks on the Coast of Scotland (1836 (232) [record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/67 (no. 591).

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary. A location in the Kirkandrews area [Kirkandrews Bay: name centred NX 593 478] may be suggested for the loss, which is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998).

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 3 September 2003.
