Archaeology Notes

NN72SW 10 7137 2317.

On the farm of Easter Dundurn, Comrie, about twenty years ago, a very large cairn of oblong form, was opened. In the middle was a coffin, consisting of six stones. It lay nearly due east and west. About a yard from the coffin was a row of stones about 3 feet high set on edge, placed at right angles towards each end of the coffin.

J Jamieson 1822

Henshall considers that the above refers to the chambered cairn at Kindrochat (NN72SW 5) but the orientation of the cist - 'nearly due east and west' does not agree with the central cist at Kindrochat which lies north-south. From enquiries of the owner of Easter Dundurn the OS Reviser (R Glossop, 25 September 1954) has located what he considers is obviously a despoiled chambered cairn (NN 7137 2317) although this view was not shared by OS (D Arthur, 29 October 1954).

A S Henshall 1972

There is nothing to suggest that the feature located by OS (R Glossop) is the remains of a chambered cairn. The site is merely a depression at the edge of a field which has been filled with field clearance stones. Dr Jamieson's cairn is almost certain to be the cairn at Kindrochet (NN72SW 5).
