Archaeology Notes

NN72SE 20 7597 2488 to 7600 2470.

At NN 7597 2488 and NN 7600 2470 respectively there are two small, unnamed, depopulated farmsteads. Each consists of at least five buildings, a corn drying kiln and a small associated enclosure. The buildings, generally defined by partially turf-covered walls 0.5m high, vary in size from 8.0m x 3.0m to 25.0m x 4.0m.

These farmsteads are almost certainly associated with the field banks to the north and west which enclose numerous irregular clearance heaps, averaging about 0.5m to 1.0m high. The site was probably depopulated in the mid 19th century.

Visited by OS (RD) 25 October 1968

Two farmsteads are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perthshire 1866, sheet xciv).

The farmstead to the N at NN 7597 2488, comprises six unroofed buildings.

The farmstead to the S at NN 7600 2470, comprises three unroofed buildings and two enclosures.

They are not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1978).

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 4 March 1998.
