Archaeology Notes

NN65SE 8 c6910 5751.

(NN 6912 5752) Natural rock outcrop in farm steading with cup marks. Information from M E C Stewart, 2 February 1956.

This rock outcrop was located at NN 6910 5751. The rock-surface is almost flush with the ground and a fuel-tank has been placed on top of it, but at least four small shallow cup-marks were seen.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 24 June 1969

Fuel tank now removed. This flat outcrop bears two pairs of cup-like markings on its N and SW edges, but these may be due to weathering. On its broad top face are approximately twenty unusually small cups averaging only 3cms in diameter. Fourteen occur in two off- parallel rows of seven. They are undoubtedly artificial, but whether they are genuine Bronze Age cup marks is open to question.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (AA) 30 October 1974
