In cutting through a gravelly knoll at Bruach in July 1884, a cist, 3'9" x 2' internally, was found containing a headless contracted skeleton and an Early / Middle Bronze Age Tripartite Bowl (A Young 1953). The cist was covered by a cairn, 2' high, of gathered stones. Above the cairn there was 2' of earth, and in front was a retaining wall of the larger stones in the knoll.
The food vessel was in the possession of Mr Bullough of Meggernie who intended to enclose the cist with an iron railing.
C Stewart 1885
The short cist is still in situ at NN 6001 4749, its capstone flush with the present ground surface. The W end slab of the cist and part of the N and S slabs protrude from beneath the capstone. There is no evidence of cairn material; the type of rubble stones near the cist occur along the length of the gravel ridge.
Mr Bullough is now dead and the present location of the food vessel is not known.
Surveyed at 1:10,000.
