Archaeology Notes

NN63NW 24 62942 36573.

Just opposite the farmsteading of Kiltyrie, and close to the road, an inconspicuous mound was pointed out to me as being in former days the place of meeting of Baron-courts for the settling of disputes.

NN 6300 3662. A natural mound.

Visited by OS (RD) 11 September 1969

There is no mound visible at the NGR given by the OS. However, about 70m to the SW, close to the road and opposite the entrance to Kiltyrie farmsteading, there is a grass-grown earthen mound, which may be the remains of a barrow. It occupies a prominent position on the edge of a terrace, commanding extensive views from E through S to SW. Most of the E half of the mound has been quarried away, but it appears to have been circular, measuring about 12m in diameter, and it now stands 2m high. The NGR given was taken from a handheld GPS receiver.

Gillies lists the locations of the chief Baron Courts in Breadalbane, but does not include Kiltyrie.
