Archaeology Notes

NN63NE 18 6645 3600.

According to the farmer at Dall, this 'cairn', possibly a crannog can only be seen when the water level is exceptionally low.

Visited by OS 25 August 1969.

This crannog is exposed at times of low water level and is oval on plan, measuring about 30m by 16m. Structural timbers (both horizontal beams and vertical piles) project from among the boulders that form the top of the crannog. This monument is probably the 'cairn' noted by Gillies 'in the bay to the west of the pier' in the 'neighbourhood of Ardeonaig'. It may also be the 'small island' that Mitchell noted 'near Ardeonaig'.

As part of the Scottish Crannog Survey a number of sites in Loch Tay, originally surveyed in 1979 (PSAS 1982, 17-38), were resurveyed in August 2000.

NN 664 360 Craggan. One of the timbers noted in the original 1979 survey appears to have been cut with a saw in antiquity. A possible log boat (NN63NE 18) was observed near the shore about 110m NW of the site.
