(NN 5873 9378) Site of St. Michael's Chapel (NR) Graveyard (NR) (Remains of)

OS 6" map, Inverness-shire, 2nd ed., (1903)

An old Roman Catholic chapel and burying-ground now replaced by a later (1845) building on the opposite side of the river. No burials have taken place since the early 1860's and the gravestones are recumbent.

Name Book 1870.

No trace of St. Michael's Chapel can now be seen. It was pulled down 'stone by stone' and rebuilt at Pluscarden Priory (Information from Captain J H Macpherson, Dunmore, Newtonmore, Inverness-shire). The graveyard in which it stood is visible as a turf-covered rubble wall 0.6m high, forming a D-shaped enclosure measuring 27.0m x 25.5m. Within this enclosure there are two recumbent gravestones and several erect gravestones. The building which replaced St. Michael's Chapel (NN 5835 9333) is now completely destroyed.

Visited by OS (R D) 1 October 1965.
