M. B. Pearl: [max. date] 1908

57 ft. Built of wood at Lowestoft.

Sank after collision with Comet Star of Banff BF 16. Crew saved.

Archive Ref: SN 20/3/1909 p. 4 col. 5;

MS/3025, no. 909.

(Classified as wooden dandy, in ballast: date of loss cited as 3 August 1908). Pearl: this vessel sank following a collision about 5 miles SE 1/2 S of Noness Head (Comet Star) [Capt.] Aitken.

Registration: Lerwick. Built 1892. 37grt. Length: 18m. Beam: 5m.

(Location of loss cited as N59 55.0 W1 5.5)..

I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being derived from the unverified location of loss that is cited by Whittaker. An alternative location in or near St Magnus Bay (opening onto the Atlantic) was formerly suggested.

Noness or No Ness is presumably a contraction of North Ness, and is a place name fould in several locations around Shetland.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 4 July 2007.
