Archaeology Notes

NN51NW 3 530 175.

At Ballimote (NN 530 175) in or near the garden of the herd's house near Balquidder, there is a considerable scatter of slag (Information from

W G Aitken, FSA Scot, 11 Craiglea Rd., Burghmuir, Perth).

Visited by OS (R D) 16 October 1969.

This scatter of iron slag was not located. The farmer has no knowledge of it and there is no garden to the bothy at Bailemore.

Visited by OS (J P) 20 February 1974.

Aitken dates the bloomeries in this area to the 15th century.

W G Aitken 1973.

Activities

Field Walking (4 April 2012)

NN 5354 1924 – NN 5290 1750 A walkover survey was undertaken on 4 April 2012 along the proposed route of a new underground power line to connect with the Ballimore hydro scheme. The survey identified the remnants of the former settlements of Bailemeanoch (NN51NW 11) and Clachglas (NN51NW 9), and the scant remains of three previously unrecorded buildings towards the N end of the survey area. Each survives as little more than one course of rubble walls covered with vegetation.
