Lerwick, 10th Mar., the JANUS (not as before reported), (schr.), of Brevig, is on shore, bottom up, at Culswick: one corpse found lashed to the mainboom: none of the cargo (timber) saved.
Source: Shipping Intelligence, LL, No. 18,689, London, Monday March 16 1874.
Lerwick, 10th Mar., the hull of a small vessel was discovered, 5th Mar., floating, bottom up, in a goe on the coast West of Culswich Sandsting. From some broken pieces of timber floating near, and the contents of a small box, it appears the vessel was timber laden, and named JANUS, of and from Brevig, for Scotland. The box appears to have belonged to the mate, Hans Bernhardt Johnsen: and the master who commanded the vessel when on voyages to Banff and Peterhead last year was Johansen. It is supposed that the crew have perished. It is not expected that any part of the vessel or cargo will be saved. [Record received incomplete].
NMRS, MS/829/70 (no. 4090).
(Classified as schooner, with cargo of timber: date of loss cited as 4 March 1874). Janus: this vessel was wrecked at Culswick, Shetland. Registration: Brevig.
(Location of loss cited as N60 10.75 W1 31.0).
I G Whittaker 1998.
The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Sandsting is not noted as such on the 1999 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name apparently applies to an ill-defined area on the West coast of Shetland, around HU 31 51.
