Archaeology Notes

NJ51NE 195 5632 1659

This granite milestone is situated in the NE angle of the junction of the A980 and A944 public roads about 210m WSW of the old toll-house at Toll Croft (NJ51NE 65). Rectangular in section, it measures 0.5m from E to W by 0.34m transversely and 1.1m in height, and has a narrow chamfer around the edge of the flat top. All that is legible of the legends on the S and W faces are the letters 'TO', below which on the W face there is a possible 9. The S face also bears an Ordnance Survey benchmark.

The stone is marked as a 'Direction Stone' on both the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire, 1869, sheet lxii; 1901, sheet lxii.NE).

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, RL), 9 June 2003.

Field Visit (21 May 2011)

This stone is not a milestone as previously recorded, but a guidestone, the S face probably originally providing an indication of the direction to Alford to the E. The named destination on the narrow W face, which has been chiselled off, is not known.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 21 May 2011.
