Archaeology Notes

NO24SW 106 From 2165 4014 to 2499 4256.

NO 2165 4014 to NO 2499 4256 Perambulation failed to find any evidence to prove or disprove this conjectural course (WDJ).

NO 2165 4014 to NO 2281 4085 "If the road followed the high ground NW of the town, it may be represented by the winding lane from Causeway-end?to Gartlochbank, Middlehills, Boyside, Beech-hill, Townhead and Larghan" (Crawford 1949).

NO 2260 4068 to NO 2281 4085 is on the line of the road (Crawford 1949).

NO 2356 4148 to NO 2396 4181 is on the line of the road (Crawford 1949).

NO 2396 4148 "From here I suspect that the Roman road left the modern by-road and fell into the line of the main (Forfar) road at Arthurstone" (Crawford 1949).

NO 2345 4122 to NO 2499 4256 It seems clear that the ridge would be followed as elsewhere on the route rather than the lane at its northern foot (see NO 2356 4148 to NO 2396 4181) as has been suggested by Crawford (1949). (Margary 1957).

Visited by OS (WDJ) March 1969.

O S G Crawford 1949; I D Margary 1957.
