Standing Building Recording (17 September 2019)
NT 26939 74315 A historic building survey of two former shops with tenement flats above (NT27NE 5112) and a former church hall (NT27NE 6399) at 2–4 Abbey Mount, was undertaken, on 17 September 2019, in advance of development. All three are listed late 19th-century buildings.
The shops, built in 1887, are typical examples of late 19th-century shop fronts to the ground floor of the late Victorian tenements at Abbey Mount. The rear hall at No 3 clearly had a number of functions throughout its lifetime, starting as a church hall in the late 19th century and further used within the community in the early and mid-20th century. A corridor was also added later to the SE side to create a more functional space. In the later 20th century, the hall was divided into smaller meeting rooms with toilet facilities and a larger space on the first floor, which caused some brick blocking of original openings and replacement of stairs.
